Fishings & Infrastructure Improvements


We invest in improvements to fishings access and new infrastructure on the Novar beats on an annual basis. Below is a summary of key improvements made in recent years:

Beat 2 – A new parking area created behind Strone, and nearly 800m of new pathway created from there to the river, then downstream along the left bank to the swing bridge on the Meadow Flats (top). New styles erected at fenceline crossings.

Beat 2 – new access path/steps to Round/Cliff pools.

Beat 3 – new access path/steps to March, Dalreoch Falls (pictured left) & Shingle Bend.

Beat 3 - new shelter erected at the Stones pool.

Beat 4 - new access path/steps to Cunningham's (LB), Valve (RB).

Beat 5 – improved parking, and new shelter at Crag pool.

Beat 5 - improved steps below road bridge.

5 x new water depth gauges erected - located at Junction B2 (pictured right), Dalreoch Burn B3, Hoch B4, Lower Robertson B5 & Otter B6.

 

 

Note: the depth gauge pictured to the right was photographed with the water level at 'summer low' (zero inches). Beat 1 – moved fishing hut at Kinloch Bridge (bottom).

Beat 4 – new shelter at Hoch pool with extensive parking area (top).

Beat 4 – handrails for ramps off of new Wagtail footbridge.

Beat 4 – handrail for Dalreoch Bridge (middle).

Beat 5 – steps on slope below road bridge.

Rod racks and BBQ bases added for all huts/shelters.

Several new seats.

Repaired/renovated signage.

Drainage and rebuilding of river bank at Holly pool.

Loanridge Beat - reinstatement of main access path, and clearance of access paths to pools to open up the fishing.

Beat 4 – reinstatement of access to left bank with an 80ft/24m single-span footbridge over the Wagtail pool! This crossing provides access to left bank fishing of Holly, Minister's, Cunningham's, Flat Rock and Valve pools in all water levels (top).

Beat 4 - repairs to Minister's pool catwalk.

Beat 5 - major repairs to timber decking on Aggie’s Bridge pool, and erection of new handrail (bottom).

Beat 6 - clearing of landslide on access road.

Beat 6 - reprofiling of river bank on Miller’s Pocket pool.

Several new seats.

Beat 1 - Kinloch Bridge hut improvements (top).

Beat 1 - New shelter erected at Big Bend (bottom).

Opening up of new pools - runs below Aggie’s Bridge (LB) and Miller’s Pocket.

10 new seats - B1 Flats, B2 Junction, B3 Shingle Bend, B3 Ace, B3 Folly, B4 Dalreoch Bridge, B4 Landslide, B4 Cliff, B5 Big Rock, B5 Rush.

New access road to Beat 6, from Struie road direct to electricity substation. Major repairs to access road alongside the river on Beat 6, as well as on middle Beat 1.

Beat 1 - repair and relocation of top Beat 1 hut to Kinloch Bridge.

Beat 2 - new fishing hut erected at Junction pool (bottom).

Beat 4 - new shelter erected above Minister's pool with new parking area (middle).

Beat 5 - new shelter erected at Aggie's Bridge (top).

5 new seats - B1 Burn, Ferry, Currie's, B2 Glide, B6 Otter.

Major roads works program continued: almost 1000 tons of materials quarried from above Loch Morie and used on river access roads. Repairs and new parking areas laid throughout the beats, with major reconstruction work on the lower Beat 1 and upper Beat 5.

Biggest pool maintenance effort for many years, including use of a pole-saw from Beat 2 downstream, greatly improving fishing access.

Beat 3 - new shelter erected at the Parks (top).

Beat 4 - construction of temporary crossing to left bank via walkways on to and off of Holly Island (subsequently lost in a spate!) (bottom).

Beat 4 - new walkway across backwater between Dalreoch Bridge and the left bank.

Beat 4 - repairs to catwalks, steps etc and improvements to access paths around middle Beat 4.

Major works program for access roads; over 600 tons of road material was quarried above Loch Morie, and transported to, then laid on access roads on Beats 2, 3, 4 and 5. Several new culverts.
